NUCHR, KAN-WIN (Korean-American Women In Need) and the Asian American Studies Program at Northwestern held a speaker panel offering cutting edge research and best practices for the community to address Asian trafficked victims into the U.S. and Chicago, while making big picture connections to the dehumanization of and violence against Asian women and girls. It was the first step for Asian community organizers to meet and strategize with the city’s main task forces addressing the trafficking agenda for future collaboration and useful networking opportunities. Panelists included Rachel Durchslag, the Executive Director of Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation; Kaitlyn Lim, Coordinator of the Polaris Project in Los Angeles; Timothy Lim, Professor of Asian Studies at Cal State, Los Angeles; Bing Luo, Immigrant Services Advocate of the National Immigrant Justice Center/Heartland Alliance; and Kavitha Sreeharsha, Staff Attorney of Legal Momentum.

Film screening of Devil Came on Horseback
As part of the Program of African Studies “Prospects for Peace in Sudan” event, NUCHR and the Program of African Studies put on a film screening of “The Devil Came on Horseback,” a documentary on the genocide in Darfur. The movie follows the experiences of former Marine Captain Brian Steidle, a military observer for the African Union who uses his photographs to raise awareness of the atrocities committed by the Janjaweed militias funded by Sudan’s government. Visiting scholar and expert on Sudan, Oystein Rolandsen of the University of Oslo, Norway held a talk earlier in the day and introduced the film.
