International Organizations and Law (ILIO)
Convened by Karen Alter, Associate Professor of Political Science and Ian Hurd, Assistant Professor of Political Science
The International Organizations & International Law Faculty Working Group brings together scholars from the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the Law School, the American Bar Foundation and Kellogg School of Management. These colleagues actively research the origins, institutionalization, diffusion and influence of international norms, international organizations and international law on national and international society.
Some members focus on formal international organizations and law, and others on less formal norms and rules that may or may not be associated with international organizations. All members share a desire to investigate the topic of the interaction between international norms, international organizations, international law and international society from an interdisciplinary perspective.
This new group will meet six times this year, in seminars oriented around invited guest moderators or common readings. The group will meet in faculty homes, and visit over dinner after the meetings. Northwestern faculty members who share these research interests are invited to contact the conveners to join. Northwestern graduate students working on related issues who are at the writing stage of their doctoral dissertation may be nominated by their dissertation advisor to join the group.
