Global Engagement Studies Institute (GESI)
Bolivia | Dominican Republic and Haiti | India | Nicaragua | South Africa | Uganda
GESI is a distinctive credit-bearing study abroad program that prepares undergraduate students and recent graduates with the knowledge, tools and experiences to support critical grassroots development initiatives. GESI begins at Northwestern with intensive pre-departure coursework in community development and international leadership. GESI students then venture abroad to work in interdisciplinary teams of three to five at community organizations in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, Nicaragua, South Africa, or Uganda. At the end of the summer, students from all locations return to Chicago for a Final Reflection Summit, where they share and compare geographical experiences and explore how to transform their GESI summer into a lifetime of global engagement.
If you join GESI this summer from June 17 - August 24, 2013, you will:
- receive intensive preparatory coursework at Northwestern
- earn 2 course credits (the equivalent to 6 semester hours)
- get comprehensive training and support while abroad
- live with a homestay family
- collaborate on the design and implementation of a sustainable community development project
- gain hands-on professional experience abroad
GESI welcomes applications from all undergraduates and recent graduates. Visit our website for more information and to apply.
